Man Batters Son to Death After Quarrel

A man killed his 16-year-old son for refusing to be ejected out of the family home along with his mother.

The boy, who was waiting to resume school -- in fourth form -- today, had just witnessed an ugly scene as his father threw his mother out of their Kiogoro village home in Kisii District. He, too, was ordered to follow her to her parents' home as the father left home but he decided to stay to prepare for school this morning, the mother said.

The father set on the son with a club and then locked him inside his bedroom when he returned home in the evening. The boy's almost lifeless body was discovered at the weekend, two days later, tied to a bed inside the room, relatives reported. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Christa Marrianne private hospital in Kisii Town on Saturday evening. A doctor said he might have sustained internal injuries.

Family members identified the father as a retired army serviceman."The mother left for her parents' home on Wednesday, but the son declined to accompany her and remained behind. His father was incensed when he returned home to find the boy still there," said Mr Samuel Kenyanya, a relative.

The boy's mother confirmed that her son had refused to leave with her when she was thrown out after a domestic quarrel with the husband.

Police were yesterday looking for the man, said to operate matatus [commuter vehicles] on the Kisii-Migori-Homa Bay route.

The police said that the suspect's family had a long history of murder incidents involving kinsmen.
