Kisii Club to Host Nyanza South Cross Country Qualifiers

Top runners from Nyanza South will gather tomorrow at Kisii Golf Course for the provincial cross country trials.

The Nyanza South Athletics Kenya branch chairman Peter Angwenyi said runners from the region are eager to qualify for the World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa.

The 12km senior men's race will be keenly watched. Gideon Ngatuny, who ran 26:51 in last year's Chiba Ekiden relay marathon in Japan, will face strong challenge from Mekubo Mogusu and Jefferson Siekei.

Other elite runners include Kebirigo Athletics Club's Boaz Mayaka, Owen Magori, Said Salim, Wesley Ochoro, and Moses Orenge, The women's race has also attracted elite runners including Philes Ongori, who has participated in the Chiba Ekiden for the last two years. She has a personal best of 31:18.85 in 10,000m. Others are Grace Momanyi, Winfridah Mocheche Kebaso and Evelyn Kimwei.

Athletics Kenya issued selection guidelines. Senior men's runners in 12km must have clocked under 40 minutes while the senior women's 8km qualifiers must have a time of 30 minutes and below. Junior men's 8km runners must hit 26 minutes and below.
