Cross Country - Ngatuny Top in Kisii As Mayaka Wins Nyamira Race

Japan based Gideon Ngatuny clocked an impressive 36 minutes and 41 seconds to win the Kisii District 12-kilometre title at the Kisii district cross country championships yesterday.

Ngatuny, who was in Kenya's victorious team at the Chiba Ekiden last year, beat his closest rival Timothy Momanyi by two minutes.

Momanyi clocked 39:42.10. Fancied Owen Magori was relegated to the third position in 39:43.95 while Evans Gwako was beaten to fourth position with 39:54.78 during the district championships held at the Kisii Golf Course. Speaking after winning the race Ngatuny said: "I have trained enough and I want to make sure I make it to Kenya's team to Mombasa. I have trained hard and I'm optimistic I will make it to Mombasa."

Jacqueline Kemunto overcame three opponents to win the 8km senior women's race in 29:42.17 and was closely followed by Ruth Bosibori in 29:44.11 while Milkah Kona came a distant third in 33:21.98.

Ogendi Gisemba clocked 26:11.34 to win the 8km junior men's race beating Solomon Meraba of Mesabisabi to second spot in 26:13.34 while compatriot Hesborn Ouko came third in 26:21.72.  Kiomiti Secondary School runners dominated the 6km junior women's race. Favourite Jane Onyangi claimed top honours winning the race in 22:15.03 and was followed by schoolmate Elda Kona came second in 22:58.44. In Nyandarua, a 27-member squad was selected yesterday at Kwa Nguku running to represent Nyandarua district at the central provincial championships on February 3 in Karatina.

Upcoming athlete, Charles Munyeki, who won the hotly contested 12km race, beat Japan based Samuel Wanjiru to second place. Munyeki clocked 36.12.3 while Kamau returned 36.25.1.

"It was tough to have Kamau behind me, he is everybody's favourite. I had to fight hard." said Munyeki.  In Nyamira, Boaz Mayaka of Kebirigo Athletics Club claimed the Nyamira District 12km title clocking 38 minutes and 16 seconds. He edged out Evans Mayoyo of Metamaywa to second position in 38:126.36 during the championships that were held at Magombo market.

In Nakuru, Wilfred Taragon won the 12km race when he returned an impressive time of 36 minutes 50.0 seconds during the event staged at the Jomo Kenya Secondary School in Bahati.

Teammate Victor Kigen finished in the second position after clocking 36.56 seconds followed by David Langat whose time was 37 minutes 46. 0 seconds.
