Arita And Kemunto Best At Kemera Open Race

Stephen Arita and Jackline Kemunto claimed top honours during the inaugural Kemera Open cross-country in Nyamira District on Friday.

Arita narrowly beat Kebirigo Athletics Club's Boaz Mayaka to win the 10km race in 30:32.00 while Mayaka timed 30:33.00 to finish second in the inaugural event.

Daniel Gekara came third in 30:34:45 while fancied William Morwabe clocked 30:36.45 to finish fourth.

Angolan national Alvino Dumbo recorded an impressive 31:01.00 to finish seventh. Dumbo is currently training in Kisii under coach Ibrahim "Mtu Muhimu" Nyamache.

Kemunto of Erera beat more than 50 runners to win the women's 6km race on 23:53.04 beating compatriot Ruth Bosibori to second spot in 23:54.06 while Lydia Nyangaresi finished third in 24:41.06.

Kitui West MP Nyiva Mwendwa officially flagged off the race..

Mwendwa regretted the government was neglecting pioneer runners who brought fame to the country in the 1960s and 1970s.

She said former runners like Olympic medallist Charles Asati who was present should be rewarded for their efforts.
