Gucha 10km Run to Be Held On a Brand New Route

This Friday's Safaricom Sambaza Gucha 10km road race in Gucha district will be run on a new route, organisers announced yesterday.

Athletics Kenya Nyanza South branch chairman Peter Angwenyi said the race, which is organised by AK and Kebirigo Athletics Club, will start at Etono along the Kilgoris-Kisii road and end at Tendere secondary school playground in Ogembo town.

"The race will start at Etono and take runners to Mogonga and finally to Tendere in Ogembo town," he added.

Speaking in Kisii, Angwenyi said they abandoned last year's route in favour of the new one due to the dilapidated state of the road adding that the new route was fair.

The Sambaza race is the second in the three series dubbed "Gusii Golden Series". The first in the series was the Safaricom Bamba 10km road race held last month in the Kisii town streets. The third and grand finale will be the Safaricom Kebirigo 10km race in October.

Angwenyi added that a host of runners from Nairobi, South and North Rift will grace the event in preparation for the Standard Chartered Marathon which will be held on October 29 in Nairobi.

"Athletes from most parts of the country have confirmed they will participate in the event to build on their speed ahead of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon," Angwenyi added.

Assistant Minister for Sports who is also the Bomachoge MP Joel Onyancha is expected to be the chief guest, Angwenyi added.

Angwenyi said runners will pay Sh50 as participation fees. Athletics coaches in Gucha among them Angwenyi Ontita have vowed to give runners from Rift Valley who have dominated the events a run for their money.

Angwenyi said the men's and women's winners will each receive a cow and Sh10,000.
