$125,000 Mill for Coffee in Kisii Opened

A Sh10 million KPCU milling plant in Kisii has started operating.

Kenya Planters Co-operative Union regional manager Joe Maina said yesterday that the mill, with a capacity of 300,000 90-kilogramme bags of coffee a year, was the first in the region.

The plant is expected to cut transportation and milling charges by 50 per cent.

Currently, Kisii, Nyamira and Gucha, Rachuonyo and Trans Mara districts jointly produce 70,000 bags of coffee a season.Mr Maina said delegates from the 29 primary coffee societies in the region had approved the setting up of the new mill.

They also requested the union to reduce milling charges.

But Mr Maina said their charges were still the lowest compared to other competitors.

At the same time, the manager said KPCU was considering giving credit to the 100,000 coffee farmers in the region to revive the coffee sector that has been performing poorly over the last 10 years.

The decision would, however, depend on the ability of the various society management committees, he said.
