Robbery Claims: Relatives Killed

Four men and their mother have been killed in Kisii after they were accused of robbery with violence.

Two were gunned down by the police while the others were killed by a mob.

Mrs Agnes Orori, who was attacked by the mob on Sunday, was the latest victim. Her two sons, Mr Matagaro Orori and Mr Jared Orori, had been gunned down by police the previous day at Nyamasibi area where they had moved to when residents of Nyamage area of Nyaribari Chache constituency started flushing out alleged criminals.

Matagaro's step brothers, Mr Haron Siro, 29, and Mr Osoro Siro 21, were killed by a mob on April 9. Their graves are still fresh.

Their father, Mr Siro Ochoki, is undergoing treatment at the Kisii District Hospital after suffering head and back injuries when the mob attacked him on Sunday. Four houses and a pit latrine were pulled down and set on fire by the crowd that attacked the homestead, killing Mrs Orori and leaving her husband for dead.

The mob had accused the couple of protecting their sons who were alleged to be dangerous criminals.

Kisii police boss Augustine Kimantiria said that Matagaro and Jared were gunned down by policemen who had laid an ambush after a tip off from the public. Two homemade guns and four bullets were recovered from the house where the two had been sleeping on the night of the raid.

Mr Kimantiria also confirmed the death of the other three - Agnes, Haron and Osoro - in the hands of the public. He urged wananchi not to kill suspects but hand them over to the police whenever they arrest them.

However, there were claims that some police officers were colluding with criminals, provoking public anger. But Mr Kimantiria defended the officers working in the area saying no complaints had been made against them.

A crowd of more than 100 had descended on the family home after receiving information that Matagaro and Jared had been killed by police.

The mob killed their mother - whom they alleged had been a beneficiary of property stolen by her children. They also burnt down her house.

Then they raided the house in which Mr Siro was sleeping and injured him before slashing his cow.

Mr Bosco Siro, Mr Siro's son, denied that his brothers were linked to criminal activities. But Mr Siro's second wife, Mrs Nyambeka Orori, said some of the victims were robbers but others were not. However, she did not say who among the dead had been linked to robberies.

More than 10 people have been killed by gangsters in the district since the beginning of the year.
