Kenyan World Bank Staffer Dies in US

A Kenyan working with the World Bank in the US was killed in a tragic five-car road accident.

June Bitutu Nyanchoka, 24, had gone to visit a friend in Florida when her car was involved in the accident last weekend. She was based in Washington, DC and worked in the Consultative Group for International Research (CGIR), which is part of the World Bank group.

Police said the road crash was caused by the driver of a pick-up truck who lost control of his vehicle and jumped the median and rolled into the path of oncoming traffic.Nyanchoka's car was hit by the pickup and she died instantly. Her companion was seriously injured.

The news of her death was received with shock by Kenyans living in and around Washington, DC, especially those working at the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

The head of Human Resource Services at the World Bank, Xavier Coll sent out an obituary notice to all staff at the Bank.Nyanchoka was involved in various youth groups and old school networks including Msongari in Nairobi.Family and friends of Nyanchoka are meeting to arrange to fly her body to Kenya for burial in Kisii.

Meanwhile, it is understood that the police are weighing whether to press more serious charges against the driver of the pick-up truck that triggered the huge accident.
