Simeon Nyachae, 74

At 75 next year, Mr Nyachae will be making a second stab at the presidency should he decide to run.

He contested the presidency in 2002 and came third.  Education: He was educated at Kisii Government African School and studied public and social administration at South Devon Technical College and Torquay College in Britain.

Political Profile: He has occupied high-profile positions in politics but is also a well-known administrator and businessman.

His political influence among the Kisii community suffered a setback in the referendum as members voted for the Orange against his Banana group that was supporting the proposed Constitution.

The 300,000-plus voters he controlled are quickly slipping into the hands of younger and less conservative politicians.

Experience: He spent the best part of his active life in the civil service rising from a district officer to chief secretary - head of the civil service and secretary to the Cabinet - the most powerful personality ever in that post who initiated the district focus for rural development programme that decentralised project planning and implementation to the districts.

Popularity: The voting pattern of the last elections indicated that while he was popular in his home turf, he was yet to win enough followers across the country.

Integrity: He For a man whose entire life has been shaped in the glare of public administration and politics, he is a hard man to scrutinise but has lived a life which leaves no room for anyone to question his authority.

Family: He has three wives and several children.
