There was a flare-up when politicians from Kitutu Masaba clashed after a meeting called by area MP, Mwancha Okioma, to discuss the matter ended in disarray.
The leaders, led by Okioma, stormed out of the meeting held at Magombo trading centre after they differed over the boundaries, the headquarters and the name of the proposed Masaba District.
Some leaders said the new district should be created by merging Kitutu Chache and Kitutu Masaba while others insisted it be curved out of Borabu, Rigoma and Masimba divisions of North Mugirango, Kitutu Masaba and Nyaribari Chache constituencies respectively.
One group proposed Keroka town as the headquarters, but the other lobbied for Manga Divisional headquarters. A retired education officer, Mr Bernard Ankiri, sparked the wrangle after suggesting the district be called Borabu with its headquarters at Keroka. But leaders from Manga Division insisted the district be known as Bogetutu and be centred at Manga.
Councillors Joel Atuti, Andrew Magangi, Teresa Monari and Malack Oiko were heckled for supporting Keroka and forced to cut their speeches short.
The meeting turned into a shouting contest, prompting the walkout.
Nyamira District Commissioner Samuel Karanja is scheduled to convene a meeting next Tuesday at Sironga High School to discuss the matter. On January 18, Kisii DC, Abdulahi Leloon, will chair a meeting with leaders from the three Abagusii districts.
