Kisii District Dominate Events At Prisons Athletics Meet

Kisii District emerged the overall victors during the Nyanza Province Prisons athletics championships at the Moi Stadium, Kisumu, over the weekend.

They amassed a total of 273 points to elbow defending champions, Kisumu, to the second position with 205 points, while Migori were third with 48 points.

In the men's 100m dash, Kodiaga's Fredrick Omathe breasted the tape first in 11.47, ahead of team-mate Harrison Koipiri who returned 11.63.

Kennedy Otieno of Kibos was third after clocking 11.70.

In the 800m race, Geoffrey Munai of Kisii won in 2:02.08, while team-mate Nelson Tarus followed in 2:04.49. Kodiaga's Hudson Selumbu was third in 2:09.71.

Samuel Olekin of Kisii carried aloft the 10,000m mantle after clocking 33:30.36, as Peter Chepkwony, also of Kisii, finished second (34:35.35). Hillary Kiplagat of Kodiaga was third in 35:32.61.

In the women's races, Jemima Bosire of Kisii won the 100m sprint after returning a time of 19.16, ahead of Ndinda Munyoki of Kisii who was timed at 26.34. Grace Atabo, also of Kisii, finished third (28.68).

The 400m race saw Bosire cross the finish line in 69.92, while team-mate Elizabeth Wanjala and Kodiaga's Mercy Adoyo were second and third in 74.36 and 78.47 respectively.

Monica Akoth of Kodiaga triumphed in the 1,500m race after she managed 4:49.82. Kisii's Nancy Musungu came second in 5:58.77, while another runner from Kisii, Magdaline Wagaki, was third (5:62.33).

Dorcas Ng'ang'a of Kisii ran away with the 800m title after she returned 2:54.73 to beat Nancy Musungu to the second position (2:59.60). Magdaline Wagaki (Kisii) was ranked third in 3:11.78.

The winners will represent the province during the national Prisons championships in Nairobi next month. They will put up camp on May 28.
