Districts Hit By Water Shortage As Streams And Springs Run Dry

Several streams and water springs have dried up and the few still with water are contaminated by sewage.
In Kisii Town, residents have been unable to get a steady supply since Christmas Day and vendors are making a killing selling a 20-litre container at Sh20, up from Sh5.
Hoteliers and other consumers wait fort their supplies in long queues from morning to midnight.
Help with latrines
Some of the residents asked the municipal council to help them build pit latrines.Nyanchwa stream, which serves the town, is drying up due to what the residents say is the planting of gum trees at Daraja Mbili.
A number of people complained that the situation had gone from bad to worse.They appealed to Water minister Mutua Katuku to intervene and ensure the situation did not get out of control.
There has been a water crisis in Kisii for the past one year, with the Kegati pumping capacity stretched to unmanageable levels.Sh60 million for water- The residents claimed that Sh60 million released by the Government for water supply rehabilitation in Kisii in 2002 was not used for that purpose.
