Economy: Nyachae's plea

Finance Minister Simon Nyachae on Friday appealed to teachers to stop "pushing the Government too hard" for higher salaries. The Minister called on Kenyans to support the Government in its efforts to revive the country's economy.

Mr Nyachae also appealed to bankers to stop pushing for the removal of the tax on soft loans saying they were well paid and should be the first to set an example.

Noting that there were 13 million Kenyans living below the poverty line, he called on teachers to be considerate while in their efforts to have their scheme for higher salaries implemented .

He warned teachers against being incited to go on strike by those he said had businesses to depend on should the worst come to the worst.

The Minister said it was ridiculous for right thinking Kenyans to take to the streets in ugly demonstrations hurling insults at Ministers and even demanding for the "retrenchment" of the Head of State adding that that amounted to treason.

He was speaking at Kisii Catholic Cathedral Church in Nyaribari Chache constituency where he presented a cheque of Sh1 million to Bishop Joseph Mairura Okemwa to go towards the development of the church.
