Nyachae Answers Moi

Former Finance Minister Simeon Nyachae yesterday declared that he shall seek the presidency in 2002. Mr. Nyachae told President Moi to stop threatening leaders who were championing the democratic rights of Kenyans. He said he would not stop talking about rampant graft in the Government until the mess is cleaned up.

Mr. Nyachae, who was speaking at Kirwa Secondary School in his Nyaribari Chache Constituency, was accompanied by nine MPs and more than 100 councillors. He said: "I shall not backtrack this time round and I now leave it to God and Kenyans to judge."He said that contrary to the President's charge thathe is a selfish leader, he had no intentions of being selfish.

MPs at the function were Mr. Kipkalia Kones, Mr. Kipruto arap Kirwa, Mr. Cyrus Jirongo, Mr. Soita Shitanda, Mr. Zephania Nyanwara, Mr. Antony Kimmeto, Mr. Enock Magara and an Assistant Minister, Mr. Zebedeo Opore. Earlier, two Cabinet Ministers from the Abagusii community accused Mr. Nyachae of being used by the opposition to divide the community.

Prof Sam Ongeri of Public Healtwh and Mr. Chris Obure of Agriculture and an Assistant Minister for Local Authorities, Mr. Joseph Kiangoi, vilified Mr. Nyachae, calling him a "perpetrator of divisive politics".

They supported President Moi's recent remarks that Mr. Nyachae was selfish and criticised opposition MPs for defending and supporting Nyachae's drive for the presidency.

Addressing a press conference in Kisumu, the ministers told Mr. Nyachae to drop his presidential ambition.

"His attempts to divide and distance the Abagusii community from the government would be resisted," they said.

The leaders were reacting to press reports that Kisii opposition politicians had rallied to the defence of Mr. Nyachae following the accusations by President Moi.

President Moi launched an attack on Mr. Nyachae while addressing a harambee for Sironga Girls Secondary School, Nyamira District, on Wednesday.

He said of Mr. Nyachae: "Some people are self-centred and do not think of the Abagusii people's future, but of their own."

The Minister said the Abagusii community had all along supported the government of the day and there was no doubt about it, adding that politics of confrontation and vendetta were counter-productive.

He said the mammoth crown that turned up to welcome President Moi during his one-day tour of Nyamira district, where he conducted harambee for two schools was a clear testimony of the support the people of Kisii have for him.

The Minister thanked the President for ordering the completion of Chemosit Kisii road and added that the government had embarked on the construction of Ironge-Kisii road as opposed to claims by the opposition politicians.

Mr. Obure said the community's new agenda is to deal with alleviation of poverty, which was getting worse in the area and steer clear of Moi's succession debate.
"The perception that an individual is in charge of controlling and shaping the Abagusii community's destiny is erroneous and obsolete," said Mr. Obure.

It is important to emphasize that our immediate task is how to deal with poverty alleviation," added the Minister for Agriculture.

He said that the current community's development agenda was ensure complete alleviation of poverty and raising their economic standards and not rhetoric.
