"We want to assure the President that those who elected him have no problem with him if he is ready to drop the hangers-on," the legislators said. They said it was unfair for the President to be made to carry the burden of other people, adding that the Head of State had sleepless nights because of the sins and evils that the clique around him committed.
They demanded that Kenyans be involved in the constitutional review process.Mr. Kirwa, who is the MP for Cherangany, said a group of reformists in Kanu were ready to take the adamant old guard head on before the year 2002 so that Kenyans can have an opportunity to chose a different government which would be accountable and transparent.
"There is nothing special about being a leader because leadership is only a privilege given to us by the society. Therefore, we must give the society priority when making decisions," said Mr. Kirwa.
He described as foolish those arguing against tribal alliances, saying Kenya was a composition of tribes and that the regimes of the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and President Moi were to blame for championing tribalism by favouring their tribes in every sector.
Mr. Kirwa urged members of the Kisii and the Kalenjin communities to form an alliance.
"I want to challenge you to stand up and decide how you want to be ruled in 2002. Do not be cheated by the Kanu government that Kenyan tribes cannot work together," he said.
The two legislators were speaking at a funds drive for Entanda Secondary School in Kitutu Chache constituency.
They advised the Kisii Kanu branch officials who were removed to withdraw their case from the court and instead embark on a campaign to ensure the next government is radically different from the current one.Mr. Angwenyi challenged those who had destabilised the Kisii Kanu branch to leave the local people to elect their own leaders.
He described as short sighted those calling for the extension of President Moi's term in office.
The MPs helped raise Sh350,000.
