Protect Nyachae, MPs Tell The Government

Five Kisii MPs want the government to guarantee security for former finance minister Simeon Nyachae.

They also demanded that the authorities stop harassing Mr. Nyachae and his supporters.Legislators Henry Obwocha, Jimmy Angwenyi, Zephania Nyang'wara, Enock Magara, and Assistant Minister Zebedeo Opore said that should anything happen to Mr. Nyachae "due to his stand on national issues", the Kisii community would "hit back strongly in defence of its son".

"We suspect the Kanu mafia is plotting something against him, but we want to remind the party that the government has the responsibility to provide security to all Kenyans, irrespective of their political stand," said Mr. Obwocha.

Speaking in Suba, the MPs said the Kisii community was united under Mr. Nyachae's leadership. They urged the former minister to remain in Kanu.

Mr. Nyachae said that in the last one year as the chairman of the Kanu Kisii branch, he had intentionally declined to sermon a meeting to protest at the party headquarters' failure to hand over Sh200,000 meant for the branch.

He criticised Kanu secretary general Joseph Kamotho, saying he was not qualified to lecture Kenyans on party matters. He challenged Mr. Kamotho to tell Kenyans where and when Kanu officials elected him to the post."Kamotho was imposed on Kanu followers more than 10 years ago and that is why the Kanu leadership has failed to follow the party's constitution which requires that an annual delegates meeting be called every six months," he said.

Mr. Nyachae accused Mr. Kamotho of imposing "conmen and political hawkers" in the leadership of the party branches. However, Mbita MP Otieno Kajwang and his Rongo counterpart, Ochilo Ayako, advised the former cabinet minister to start campaigning for the presidency on a Kanu ticket.

The Safina Nyeri branch yesterday urged the opposition to support Mr. Nyachae's fight against Kanu.

The branch secretary, Mr. James Gatama, said: "Mr. Nyachae's move is commendable since he has gathered courage to fight Kanu from within."Other Kanu members who belong to the same school of thought should not be cowed but rather should come out openly and without fear and join hands (with Mr. Nyachae) in his campaign against the corrupt Kanu government."

He urged the opposition and Mr. Nyachae's supporters to hold joint rallies to fight the current regime.

In a statement, Mr. Gatama said this was the only way to bring the regime, "which has subjected Kenyans to economic hardships", down to its knees.
