Quit party, Nyachae told

Former Finance Minister Simeon Nyachae was yesterday told to quit Kanu and join the Opposition.

Leaders lead by a group which recently claimed to have taken over the Kisii Kanu branch said in Kericho that he should resign as an MP and seek re-election on another party ticket if he thought he was popular.

They also challenged him to declare his wealth.Among the leaders were Mr. Geoffrey Asanyo, KFF secretary-general Sam Nyamweya, Gusii County Council chairman Casper Gichana and deputy mayor Michael Okari.

They said Mr. Nyachae's accusations against President Moi's government were futile as he served the same government as a DC, PC, chief secretary and minister. On taxes, Mr. Nyamweya said that Mr. Nyachae who was then finance minister, should tell Kenyans how the money was spent.

A civic leader in Nakuru municipality yesterday told Mr. Nyachae to quit Kanu.

Speaking during a fundsdrive in Nakuru, Cllr Samuel Toweet said the outbursts from Mr. Nyachae were meant to endear him to Kenyans. In a related development, the Labour Party of Kenya yesterday came out in support of calls for a government of national unity.

"Our party supports (Nyachae's) sentiments that Kenya should have a government of national unity. It is the only type of government that Kenyans can have confidence and faith in. And who knows, maybe that is the kind of government than can bring change in the stalled constitutional review process."

The statement was issued by the party's national chairman, Mr. Mathew Okwanda
