Poor exam results worrying, says don

The number of students joining state universities from Kisii has fallen to a dismal 127 out of the 6,000 who sat the KCSE examination last year, a university lecturer said yesterday.

"This is a reflection of the sinking education standards in the area."Prof Japheth Maranga of Moi University noted that the marketable faculties like medicine and engineering were not attracting any students from Kisii, a development that had aggravated the already worsening unemployment problem.

The lecturer was addressing parents, teachers and students at Gusii Institute of Science and Technology, during a district education day.He attributed the poor education standards to lack of operation policy in schools. "Many of our schools are just marking time and have no objectives that they strive to achieve."

Prof Maranga observed that most of the teachers lacked a reading culture and did not have time for effective teaching.

Student unrest in schools was a result of teachers failing to evoke the emotions of their students during their teaching, he added. The lecturer challenged the teachers "to try and touch the student emotions if you are to win their confidence, cooperation and control".

He regretted that local schools had adopted a culture of "continuous failing" which most school teachers had become contented with, irrespective of the poor national image depicted by the community.

Prof Maranga accused politicians of interfering too much with the running of schools, which he said was a big setback in reversing the "embarrassing" academic standards.
