Nyamweya Alleges Smear Campaign

Kanu politician Sam Nyamweya yesterday said some politicians were out to tarnish his name. Mr. Nyamweya claimed this was because he was in the political camp opposed to former Finance Minister Simeon Nyachae.

The politician, who is also the secretary-general of the Kenya Football Federation, said he was surprised that West Mugirango MP Henry Obwocha (Ford-K) had alleged in Parliament that he (Nyamweya) had embezzled Sh300,000 meant for the Shabana Football Club.

On Wednesday, Mr. Obwocha tabled in Parliament a copy of a bounced cheque and said that Mr. Nyamweya should refund the money he owes the club. Yesterday, Mr. Nyamweya presented documents at a press conference showing that all the money owed to Shabana FC had been paid to the officials. He gave details of the cash transactions dating from January 1997 when Shabana acquired the services of Danish coach Flemming Jacobsen.

Mr. Nyamweya said he would pay the coach his salary as the club was experiencing financial difficulties. He showed the Press copies of salary vouchers which Mr. Jacobsen had signed.

Mr. Nyamweya said he had paid up to Sh150,000 when the club reorganised its finances. Mr. Nyamweya said from the time Mr. Nyachae resigned, political groupings had emerged in his Kisii homeland to tarnish the names of those who did not support the former minister.

"I cannot support a political camp which I know it has no future in the country's politics," he said.
