Kitutu Chache Kanu branch chairman Nyakundi Siringi and three party activists warned the leader against supporting former Cabinet Minister Simeon Nyachae, saying this would portray the entire Kisii community as being anti-government. Mr. Angwenyi of the Trade Ministry was quoted in a section of the Press yesterday as saying he did not mind if President Moi sacked him so long as he was defending the right man (Mr. Nyachae), who, he said, was being crucified for no reason.
Terming the minister's statement "outrageous", the leaders said no one forced Mr. Nyachae to resign, adding that his personal problems should not be a cause for vilifying the entire Kisii community.
"(Mr.) Nyachae dropped himself as cabinet minister and this should not be used to tarnish the community's name," the four said in a statement. They asked Mr. Nyachae and Mr. Angwenyi to seek the support of the 42 tribes in the country to give their leadership a national outlook. Mr. Nyachae resigned his Finance portfolio following a cabinet reshuffle in which he was swapped with Mr. Francis Masakhalia of the Industrial Development Ministry.
He later publicly declared his intention to work with the Opposition "to put the government on its toes".
This did not go down well with his rivals within the party. Kanu general-secretary Joseph Kamotho has since dismissed Mr. Nyachae's intention as defeatist and inconsequential as far as the ruling party was concerned. Yesterday's statement was also signed by Gusii County Council chairman Gaster Gishana, deputy mayor Michael Okari, and a former Nakuru Kanu branch chairman, Mr. Geoffrey Asanyo.
The four said the Kisii community supported President Moi's leadership. "We cannot allow ourselves to be blackmailed by the likes of [Mr.] Nyachae and [Mr.] Angwenyi."
They said the latter had no grassroots support in his Kitutu Chache Constituency, and urged him to concentrate his efforts on implementing new development projects and reviving the stalled ones to the benefit of his constituents.
