Kisii Tense After Violent Attacks

Armed police officers were yesterday still patrolling Suneka Division of Kisii District following attacks on the homes of five murder suspects freed by the high court.

The patrols continued a day after angry villagers, on a mission of revenge, raided and destroyed the property.Tension remained high as the villagers questioned the court's decision to set free five of the eight suspects arrested last June in connection with the murder of two chiefs. Kisii DC Abdilahi Leloon said the law enforcers would remain in the troubled Bomorenda village until peace was restored.

On Thursday night, two business premises and a maize plantation were part of the property targeted by a mob of about 100 residents of Bogiakumu location.

The five were set free by a Kisumu court after the state withdrew murder charges against them.

They included Assistant Chief John Nchore and a freelance journalist Peter Makori. Three other suspects, among them Councillor Livingstone Omoke, are still in custody. Mr Nchore's storeyed building was almost set on fire.

The half-acre maize plantation that was destroyed by the mob belongs to Cllr Omoke.
The group was arrested mid last year and has been in custody on suspicion that they had participated in the murder of the two chiefs, Joseph Ombasa and Uhuru Barini.The area DC yesterday led the entire district security committee in touring the area."Anybody found tampering with private property will be dealt with accordingly," he warned.
