Policemen, led by the district CID boss Benjamin Makadwar, quelled chaos as the deceased's relatives invaded the suspect's home at Nyaguta village in Kiogoro Division. The in-laws from Nyanguru sub-location reacted angrily at the discovery of the remains of Peris Gesare Omambia, 30, in a shallow grave in her husband's tea plantation.
They, with the help of villagers, burned down three houses belonging to Charles Magoka Omambia before they cut down tea, maize and other crops on his farms.By the time the police arrived at the scene at around 10 am, the suspect's family members had also escaped for fear of attack by the mob.
Trouble started after the deceased's relatives discovered her feet protruding from a mound in the tea plantation early yesterday morning - seven days after her husband allegedly told villagers that she had mysteriously disappeared. The decomposing body was only clad in a brassier and skirt and had a panga cut on the head.
Makadwar said they had arrested the husband for questioning. He confirmed that the suspect had reported to the sub-chief on June 7, this year that his wife was missing. Some family members and relatives told journalists at the Kisii police station that the suspect had frequently quarreled with his wife over her alleged infidelity.
The suspect's son aged 14 also told journalists that he and his three siblings had been told by their father last Monday at around 4pm that their mother had disappeared from home when they asked about her whereabouts.
The body of the mother of four aged between seven and 14 was taken to Kisii District Hospital mortuary for post mortem examination.
