Training Camp is Set Up in Kisii

A new athletics camp has been opened in Kisii District.

A total of 27 athletes - 22 men and five women - were selected to join the camp during trials held at the Gusii golf course at the weekend.

Athletics Kenya's Nyanza South branch officials and veteran athletes, who organised the trials, said athletes in the camp would be coached and prepared for national and international events.

Speaking to the press after the selection, branch assistant secretary Hezron Mokamba said the athletes would make their first appearance as a team during Athletics Kenya's Kisumu track and field meeting on March 5.

Athletes behind the launch of the Kisii camp include Peter Angwenyi, the Athletics Kenya public relations officer, also the branch chairman, international athletes Philip Mosima, Japan-based Stephen Mayaka, Charles Obwoge and Lucia Subano, who is currently in Canada. Mokamba, a retired athlete, is the team's head coach.

He said those in camp were considering the possibility of taking part in the sports minister Ochillo Ayacko's road race at Awendo this month.
