op KCPE Candidate Opts to Sell His Kidney to Raise School Fees

A top Kenya Certificate of Primary Education candidate in Kisii has opted to sell one of his kidneys to raise school fees for his secondary education.

Sylvestor Ondieki Obiri, 13, who scored 432 marks in last year's KCPE examinations, said he reached the decision because his single mother cannot afford to raise his fees.Obiri, who sat for his KCPE at Getembe Primary School, said two of his brothers dropped out of Form One two years ago and are hawking groundnuts and paper bags in Kisii town.

His mother is a water vendor in the town. "I want to make a difference in our family and since I have been told that a kidney can be sold to willing hospitals or patients, I want to sell mine to raise school fees," said Obiri.

The boy's mother, Catherine Kwamboka, said she did not succeed in getting bursary for her children.The family hails from Kitutu Chache in Kisii District.

Meanwhile, Rangwe MP Philip Okundi has said orphans and bright but needy students would be give priority while distributing bursaries in his constituency.

The MP also said a post-secondary bursary scheme for students going to colleges has been introduced.He said Sh6 million had been disbursed by the Government for bursaries through the Constituency Developmnt Fund.

He said many Aids orphans, dropped out of school yet they had the right to education and right to be protected from discrimination.

He now said following the introduction of free primary education and constituency development fund all this will now be a thing of the past.

Okundi who is the chairman of the Parliamentary committee on orphaned and vulnerable children revealed that the Government had introduced a policy framework to cater for the education of the orphans and offer other essential services.

He also said the Government has raised awareness with societies to create an environment that enables support for children affected by HIV/Aids through the constituency/Aids committees and community based organisations.
