Linear Bus Comes to the Support of Kisii Cross-Country Run

The Linear Bus Company will sponsor today's Nyanza South provincial cross-country championship at the Kisii Golf Club.

Making the announcement yesterday, company chairman Alfred Michira and the Athletics Kenya branch chairman Peter Angwenyi said all the top three athletes in each event would receive cash and other awards.Angwenyi, who is also the Athletics Kenya national public relations officer, said all was set for the event which would be used to select the team to represent the region in the national cross-country championships.

Angwenyi hailed Linear Bus Company for the gesture and appealed for more sponsors to support athletics events in the region.

Speaking yesterday when he supervised the marking of the course, Angwenyi said more than 500 participants are expected to attend the meeting.

Angwenyi said the meet was pushed from Saturday to today because most of the area residents are Seventh Day Adventists who worship on Saturdays.

A host of international athletes have confirmed their participation.

Those expected include Japan-based Philip Mosima, Germany-based Eunice Orwaru, Benson Ogato, Douglas Momanyi and Fred Momanyi.

Kebirigo Athletics Club's Onesmus Nyerere will lead a strong team of 28 athletes from Nyamira district to the championship. Alice Mogire, a standard eight pupil at Gesebei Primary School, will lead the women's team from Nyamira.

Nyamira AK sub-branch secretary Gilbert Omariba yesterday expressed optimism that the team would do well in today's events.

"For the first time we are having a very strong team from Nyamira. The likes of Nyerere and Mogire have shown the determination to make it to the national cross-country team and it is at Kisii that they will prove their potential," he told reporters in Nyamira town.

Angwenyi said the registration fees for today's event will be Sh50 for individuals while teams will pay Sh300.
