Join LDP, Raila Tells Kisii Voters

Cabinet minister Raila Odinga has appealed to voters in Kisii to join his Liberal Democratic Party ahead of the next General Election.

"We want you to join us in the LDP so that we can forge a strong political force from this region as we approach the next elections," Mr Odinga said in Ford People leader Simeon Nyachae's Nyaribari Chache constituency.

Sensing discomfort among his audience, Mr Odinga was quick to add that he had no grudge against their MP.

"I have a very cordial working relationship with Mr Nyachae as a Cabinet colleague."

The Roads and Public Works minister's weekend trip to Mr Nyachae's political base was the first since the last General Election.

Mr Nyachae's supporters have blamed Mr Odinga for his dismal performance in his bid for the presidency in 2002.

Mr Odinga was addressing mourners during the burial of Mr David Mogambi and his wife Mueni at Chirchiro village on Sunday. The couple perished in a road accident. Mr Mogambi was a director at the Raila Education Centre in Kibera, Nairobi.

Mr Odinga's plea to the Kisii, who rallied behind Mr Nyachae's Ford People in the last election almost to a man, comes barely two weeks after another LDP top official, Mr Musalia Mudavadi, visited the area and made a similar request.

Mr Mudavadi, addressing a meeting in Bonchari, said the LDP wanted to form a political alliance ahead of the elections.

The decision by the Liberal Democratic Party to reconsider its hard stance against their National Alliance of Kenya counterparts was just a tactical move, two MPs said.

Gem's Jakoyo Midiwo and his Bondo counterpart Oburu Odinga said that some top party members could not withstand the rising political temperature.

"We had to retreat to map out new strategies. We took the decision because the tsunami we were fearing is that our party could disintegrate," Dr Oburu said.

"Two steps forward, one step backward, you are still advancing, so we are still in the race and we should not be mistaken for cowards," he added.

His Gem counterpart explained that Luo Nyanza MPs were used to political pressure but that they had to put their colleagues' interests first.

"We are telling our NAK colleagues that the retreat is part of our strategy to put our house in order as we approaching the half mark since Narc took power," said Mr Midiwo.

The legislators made the remarks on Sunday at St Paul Lihanda ACK church in Gem constituency during a fundraising for the house of the vicar. Sh107,350 was raised.
