School Shut After Girls Protest At Marks

A girls' school in Kisii has been closed after students went on strike to protest against higher examination pass marks.The Itibo Girls Secondary School students stormed out of their dormitories at 1am on Tuesday and pelted the administration block with stones.

They also destroyed other property before principal Rose Sereti alerted the police, who moved in and averted further damage.

The Parents Teachers Association had recommended that students who did not attain the new marks, remain behind for a week's coaching when schools close for the August holiday.Kisii district education officer James Ochieng visited the school later in the morning and ordered it closed.

All the Forms 1-3 students were sent home.The incident comes barely a week after the neighbouring Itibo Boys Secondary School was closed following a strike. The boys are yet to be recalled.

Meanwhile, local police chief Francis Lemangi said his officers were on the alert, after reports that Gusii Institute of Technology students planned a strike.He was briefing the Press after district commissioner Abdilahi Leloon chaired a security meeting on how to contain rising unrest in schools.

Elsewhere, an MP suggested that secondary schools elect student councils through which grievances could be channelled to teachers and school boards to avert strikes.


Khwisero MP Julius Arunga called for a policy to address strikes or else secondary schools would continue to experience student unrest.In Embu, the local Kenya National Union of Teachers branch has opposed a plan by the Education ministry to transfer primary school teachers from the district.Executive secretary John Gitari denied there were excess teachers and called for more to be employed.
