Nyaseda urged to act

A section of political and church leaders in Gucha have urged the commissioner of police Edwin Nyaseda to stop the torturing of suspects in police cells.

The leaders further demanded for action against members of the public and police officers involved in the vice.

Reacting to last week’s incident, where two suspects were tortured to death at Ogembo Police Station cells by some five murder suspects whose cases are pending in Kisii High court awaiting consent to prosecute from the Attorney General, the leaders called for respect of human lives.

A local MP who lost one of his constituents described the death as unfortunate. He demanded that those involved in the brutal killing including the police officers who were on duty be charged.

A post-mortem conducted on the two bodies of Lameck Tengeya and Habel Mekenye revealed that they died from internal bleeding after they were tortured in the cells.

"The police officers who were on duty during the fateful day should also face the law as they failed to protect the lives of the two who were under their custody," said Onyancha .

Ogembo Town Council chairman councillor David Nyang’au and his Gucha County Council counterpart Nahashon Nyandoro demanded the transfer of all suspects with capital offences whose cases are currently pending at the Kisii High court.

The two council chairmen added that the remandees were torturing suspects booked in the cells with petty offences with impunity.

A commissioner with the Kisii Catholic Church Aloice Obure demanded the compensation of the family members of the suspects.

Gucha police boss Remis Warui told the East African Standard that police have taken sufficient measures to ensure that a similar incident does not occur again.
