The newly formed Kebirigo Runners Club will hold its first trial road race in Kebirigo town, Nyamira, on Saturday. The 12-kilometre race, which will be run between Kebirigo and Nyabara-Ebere, has already attracted over 30 athletes mainly from Nyamira District. There will also be a women's race on the same course.
Race organisers said athletes are required to report at the Nyabara-Ebere starting point before 7 am for registration ahead of the inaugural race which will be run from 8 am. Details on the course can also be obtained at the Kebirigo Resource Centre. Leading Dutch coach and manager Pieter Langerhorst is helping in organising the road race which will be used to identify middle and long distance talent in the area.
"There is a lot of athletics talent in Kisii which needs to be developed further," Langerhorst, who manages elite athlete Lornah Kiplagat, said yesterday. "We need to nurture and expose these athletes so that they achieve their full potential."
Top athletes that have come from Nyamira include middle distance stars Tom Nyariki (5,000 metres) and Fred Onyancha (800 metres). However, the district has failed to produce more world beaters in the recent past largely because of the little exposure its athletes are getting. Among the athletes expected for Saturday's race - which is open to any competitor - are George Nchoro, Daniel Manyara, Jared Onyancha, Cliff Reki, Ondieki Manyara, Joash Manyara, William Morwabe, Arabu Onchwari, Nachio Nyachienga, Daniel Gichuki, Grandius Otero and Daniel Gekara. Others are Henry Keonga, John Osugo, Joseph Osugo, Mashy Ateka, Ephraim Mwatha and John Mithi. Ruth Kometa is among the athletes entered in the women's race.
