The case of Mr Lawrence Ayiera, who met his death in his bedroom, is a chilling example of how daring gangsters in Kisii have become. Being the most recent case, Mr Ayiera's cold-blooded murder sent shockwaves among residents of the town of about 60,000 residents. "We have come for the single mission of finishing you; so open or we force ourselves in," the goons told Mr Ayiera through his bedroom window. They had laid siege on his house at midnight.
Mr Ayiera’s wife, sister and children raised the alarm but they were in for a rude shock. "Whether you shout from the roof tops or anywhere else, nothing short of finishing you will make us leave here," said the attackers who were laughing and smoking as they besieged the house and its frightened occupants. They then proceeded to break the bedroom window piece by piece as Mr Ayiera tried to keep them at bay the best way he could.
After Mr Ayiera exhausted his arrows and threw a jembe and a sword at the attackers, the gangsters gained access to the house by tearing through the window from where they fatally shot him in the stomach. As he lay dying, one of the gangsters gained entry through the same window and pumped more bullets into Mr Ayiera's body before disembowelling him and escaping.
It was hours before the police arrived. To date, no one has been arrested in connection with the grisly murder. The police say "investigations are still on and the file is still open for any fresh information" but nothing appears to be moving. Until his death late last year, Mr Ayiera was a cashier at the Kisii DC’s office. The question still begs: Why did the gangsters kill him?
