The Ford-People party leader has no intention of quitting politics now or in future. In a signed statement, the leader, Mr Simeon Nyachae, who is the MP for Nyaribari Chache, denied saying that he might not defend his seat during the 2007 General Election. Press reports said that while addressing an MP's consensus building meeting in Mombasa, he said that he would quit elective politics. Describing the report as false, Mr Nyachae said that those who had welcomed the report were "only wishful thinkers" driven by their ambitions to contest a non-existent parliamentary seat.
"I have no intention of quitting public service now or any other time in the near future. The role I play now and in the future will always be determined by the people. I will seek their opinions and mandate periodically in accordance with our constitution," Mr Nyachae said. The MP said that while he was in Mombasa, he called for a constitution that ought to sustain Kenyans for a long time and even outlive the present crop of leaders as they cannot be in leadership for ever.
Being an elected leader, Mr Nyachae said he does not owe his position to himself but to the people who elected him. He said that he was happy serving both as an MP and a party leader. Mr Nyachae has represented Nyaribari Chache since 1992 when Mr Andrew Omanga stood down in his favour.
