Sacco ordered to hold meeting

The Government has ordered that a special annual general meeting of the troubled Gusii Rural Farmers Sacco Society be held in 14 days The aim of the meeting is for shareholders to discuss the findings of a probe report by the Registrar of Cooperatives, detailing financial impropriety at the institution.

The letter by the Commissioner of Co-operatives, Martha Njuki, is addressed to the Nyanza Provincial Co-operative Officer, J. Kenduiywa, and the management of the Sacco. And in an apparent act of defiance, upon learning of the new development, the management committee sacked the general manager, Celestine Nyamumbo and ordered him to hand over to his deputy, Wilson Ainda.

Mr Nyamumbo was accused of working with the officials of the Co-operative ministry in Nairobi, instead of the management committee who are his employers. According to the letter by Ms Njuki, the signatories "must" remain as directed by the Ministry of Co-operative Development two months ago.  The Ministry had directed that district co-operative officers in Nyamira and Kisii and the now 'sacked' general manager, be signatories to the Sacco’s bank account with the Co-operative Bank.
