The war of words between rapper Jerry Jo and Club Backyard of Kisii arose out of disagreements over payment after the former failed to appear for a well-publicised performance last month, the club’s management now says. The club’s entertainment manager-cum-resident DJ Junior Mike says Jerry Jo had struck a deal with Club Backyard management for a live performance at the club on Valentine's Day but he failed to turn up because the club allegedly failed to organise for his transport from Kisumu.
Club Backyard has hosted high-fliers like Nameless, King Kong and the late Wicky Mosh, among others, and one fails to understand why we could not have used any of these names to publicise our club as Jerry Jo claims, Junior Mike says. Two weeks ago, Jerry Jo claimed that the Club Backyard was using his name to attract fans without his consent.
But Junior Mike said: Jerry Jo had agreed to come and perform at Club Backyard on Valentine's Day and that is why we went ahead and publicised the show. Unfortunately, he failed to turn up after we rejected his demands to pick him up from Kisumu." After Valentine's Day, Junior Mike says, Jerry Jo demanded a share of what was collected on that night a demand the management rejected after he let them and fans down.
"The allegation by Jerry Jo is a big lie considering that we are an honourable club with strict rules governing performances by various artistes. Our management having been in this business for a long time knows exactly what to do," added Junior Mike. He said Jerry Jo has performed at the Club Backyard more than thrice before and has always been paid as per the agreement between him and the club.
