Incensed music maker out to draw blood

Rapper Jerry Jo is spoiling for a fight. He claims a club in Kisii, known as Buck Yard, has been using his name to publicise their shows without his consent and had promised to teach the club owners a lesson.

"The last time they used my name to publicise their Valentine's Day show, I lost a 'genuine' deal with another club, which was made to believe that I was already booked for the day," grouses Jerry. He says that the club has not only used his name before to gain mileage for its shows, but also used names of other popular artistes like Nameless. "Now is the time to teach them a lesson," he fumed, without saying what he plans to do.

Though the club's resident deejay, DJ Mike Junior, denied Jerry Jo's claims, the disaffected musician stood his ground that the club had affronted him on several occasions. "They are belittling me and tainting my name among my fans in Kisii," he said. Jerry Jo is remembered for his collaboration with colleague Kunguru in the song African Woman. Recently, he released the song Bottomshieper, in praise of buxom African women, which was produced by Ogopa Djs.

The former student of Shimo la Tewa High School, Mombasa, recorded his first song, Wabiro Gi Wach, at Bruce Otieno's Johari Cleff Studio. Then he did Miel Chachacha at Maurice Oyando's Next Level Studio before joining hands with Kunguru in 2002. However, he fell out with Kunguru later that year when they disagreed over their takings from shows and decided to concentrate on his solo career.

In 2002, Jerry emerged second in the contemporary rap category of the Safaricom Star Search competition. With the win came Sh50,000 and a recording deal at Ogopa DJs' studio. He also toured major towns in the country before releasing Bottomshieper late last year. His other songs are Donna (featuring Elam) and Sakata, which will be included in the Ogopa 3 compilation due for release soon. "I want to push my musical career to the highest possible level and will not allow anybody to stand in my way," he asserts.
