New Constitution a must, insists Nyachae

Ford People yesterday demanded comprehensive amendments to the current Constitution to allow a fair playing field in the General Election. The party’s presidential hopeful, Simeon Nyachae, said this was vital if the new constitution will not be ready when the polls are called.“If we allow the elections to be held under the old Constitution without any amendments, then it will be a way for somebody to skip through,” he said.

Nyachae said some top Kanu officials have never supported the Constitution of Kenya Review Commission, adding that the Kenya people’s Coalition and Ford-P had foreseen the tactics in delaying the process.“We in the coalition had foreseen the tactics in delaying the Ghai commission four months ago,” he said. Nyachae, who was speaking to the East African Standard and KTN at a Mombasa hotel, said his party was ready to battle it out with the Government to ensure the review is completed as scheduled.

“If no comprehensive adjustments are made to the current Constitution, then we shall review our position on what to do next,” he said. The Nyaribari Chache MP called on Kenyans to be ready to block any rigging tactics in the General Elections. On the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) live coverage of the Uhuru rally in Nakuru last Saturday, Nyachae said some top Kanu officials have never engaged or succeeded in “normal competitive politics.”

Nyachae received a heroic welcome in Mombasa yesterday on his arrival at the Moi International Airport to start his four-day campaign in different parts of the region today.
