Kanu leaders plotting against me, claims Ongeri

Cabinet Minister Sam Ongeri yesterday accused Kisii Kanu leaders of trying to antagonise him with President Moi. He claimed that his colleagues, some holding national Kanu posts, were using their positions to spread propaganda that he was opposed to President Moi's choice of Mr Uhuru Kenyatta as his preferred successor.

"Political hawkers are busy maligning my name that I am opposed to President Moi's choice for their own political mileage," he said. Prof Ongeri was speaking at his Gesusu home in Nyaribari Masaba, during a meeting of a section of Kisii leaders who endorsed him as their choice for the community's spokesman.ifty civic leaders, led by Gusii County Council chairman Rasugu Ogamba, said Prof Ongeri was more experienced compared with other Kisii Kanu MPs.

Prof Ongeri's endorsement comes barely a week after his Cabinet colleague, Mr Chris Obure, was declared by another faction of Kanu leaders as the community's spokesman in the Moi's succession. During yesterday's meeting attended by Kanu parliamentary aspirants from Nyamira, Gucha and Kisii districts the leaders accused Ford People presidential candidate Simeon Nyachae of isolating the community politically. Prof Ongeri vowed to derail Mr Nyachae's campaign by organising rallies in Kisii to popularise Mr Kenyatta.
