Kisii Leaders Speak Out

The Abagusii community was yesterday cautioned against blindly supporting Simeon Nyachae's presidential bid. A group of leaders and professionals, operating under the banner of the Gusii Consultative Forum, said the election results in the three Abagusii districts of Kisii, Nyamira and Gucha will be determined by the dynamics on the ground and not individuals.
At a news conference held at Chester House, Nairobi, the group rallied behind President Moi's preferred choice, Uhuru Kenyatta. They said that unlike most of the presidential candidates who largely draw their support from their ethnic communities, Uhuru enjoys the support of a cross-section of Kenyans. Led by a University of Nairobi scholar, Professor Alloys Tumbo Oeri, members of the forum said despite Nyachae's considerable influence in the region, Uhuru will capture a considerable portion of the votes.
They criticised an unnamed leader from the community for allocating himself the position of tribal spokesman. "There is no leadership vacuum to warrant such amorphous positions of tribal spokesmen as has been suggested by one leader who used abusive and confrontational language," said Ogea Nyaencha. They said the Uhuru for President campaign is not new in Gusiiland and cautioned a section of leaders "who have just joined the campaign" not to use it to bring about wrangles.
