The Rainbow Alliance, National Alliance Party of Kenya (NAK) and the Kenya People’s Coalition (KPC) all came together yesterday for the first time for a political rally in Kisumu. And Mr Simeon Nyachae, the Ford People boss and Mr Farah Maalim, the Safina Party national Chairman, were at the rally in solidarity with Rainbow and NAK.
Nyachae announced that he was suspending the campaigns for his party and presidential bid in order to join the Rainbow Alliance in the fight to democratise Kanu and stop Project Uhuru. The leading lights of the three groupings were asked time and again to unite, field a single candidate and stop the so-called Project Uhuru.
That Rainbow, a movement in Kanu, KPC and NAK met for the first time at a political rally was being seen as politically significant in the fast-unravelling political scenario. The Rainbow leading lights in Kisumu were Kanu Secretary General Raila Odinga, former Vice-President George Saitoti, Ministers Kalonzo Musyoka and William ole Ntimama, former minister Joseph Kamotho, Westlands MP Fred Gumo, Assistant Minister Moody Awori, Wycliffe Osundwa and George Khaniri.
Others were Messrs David Sankori, Dr Adhu Awiti, Mr John Mutiso, Mr David Musila, Mr Andrew Ligale, Mr Josua Ojodeh, Mr Odeny Ngure, Dr Oburu Odinga, Mr Job Omino, Mr Otieno Kajwang’, Mr Ochieng Mbeo, Mr Oloo Aringo, Mr Oloo Otula, Mr Gor Sunguh, Mr Moses Watengula and Mr Felix Nyauchi. Also present were Mr Ochoro Ayoki, Mr Ochillo Ayacko, Mr Odhiambo Omamba, Mrs Grace Ogot, Mr Tom Onyango, Mr Orwa Otita and Mr Sospeter Ojamoong.
Messrs Kipkalia Kones, Adams Karauri and Dock Workers Union boss Kennedy Kiliku also attended the rally as part of the Kenya People’s Coalition.NAK was represented by its national chairman Dr Noah Wekesa, Mr Mwangi Waithaka, Mr GG Kariuki, Mr Wanguhu Ng’ang’a and Mr Joseph Mulusya. The leaders appealed to leading lights of the three political alliances to unite and ensure that Project Uhuru fails in the General Election.
The speakers appealed to Raila, Saitoti, Kalonzo, Nyachae, Mr Mwai Kibaki, Mr Wamalwa Kijana, Mrs Charity Ngilu, Dr Shem Ochuodho and Prof Anyang’ Nyongo to swallow their pride and agree on a single presidential candidate. They said the presidential aspirants should forget about their personal differences for the sake of Kenyans and work together to defeat Project Uhuru.
“We do not want to witness the mistakes of 1992 and 1997 re-occurring because if this happens President Moi will beat us again,” speaker after speaker said.Wetang’ula said the presidential aspirants should realise the folly of the last two General Elections and never not fall into President Moi’s trap .He said the presidential aspirant must be ready to swallow their pride and be selfless to avoid splitting of their votes once again.
“I do not want the presence of Nyachae and NAK representatives to be a show biz but a true fulfilment of what Kenyans want which is a single presidential candidate,” he said.Gumo said delegates who will go to Kasarani to vote for Project Uhuru will face the wrath of Kenyans.“We will not leave Kanu but those in Uhuru Project are the ones to go as we are fighting for democracy,” he said.Maalim said Kenya People’s Coalition came as observers but were in solidarity with Rainbow and NAK. “We want all reform forces to come together, unite and save the country from plunging further into dark decades,” he said.Mulusya and Mutiso said the Kamba community will wait for direction from Musyoka and Ngilu.
Mutiso said should Kanu fail to embrace democracy the Kamba community will defect to the Opposition.Kiliku who is the National Labour Party chairman equated Raila, Saitoti and Kalonzo to the biblical Meshack, Shadrack and Abdenego who declined to worship idols as was demanded by King Nebuchanezar. He said he fully supported the Rainbow Alliance in pursuit of democracy in Kanu and Kenya at large. Sankori appealed to the leaders to meet regularly and chart the way forward for the interest of Kenyans.Khaniri likened Raila to Jesus, saying Raila saved them from the jaws of tyranny in Kanu and brought in democracy in the party.
