Ford People presidential candidate Mr Simon Nyachae yesterday made a surprise appearance at the Rainbow rally in Kisumu.Nyachae arrived in a private helicopter which touched down just behind Moi Stadium as the rally was going on halting the proceedings. And addressing the mammoth crowd that thronged the stadium, Nyachae said he would halt campaigns to popularise his party and join the Rainbow Alliance in their fight to stop Mr Uhuru Kenyatta from succeeding President Moi.
“I came to tell you that I will halt campaigns for my party and join the Rainbow Alliance to succeed in their fight for a wider democratic space in Kanu,” he said.Nyachae said he would be happy to see the Rainbow Alliance win the war they have started in Kanu.He told former Vice-President George Saitoti, who also attended the rally, that his (Saitoti) problems with President Moi started when he told Kenyans that everybody should carry his own cross over the goldenberg scandal.
Saitoti, who spoke immediately after Nyachae, said the former minister was his friend and helped him when he was appointed Vice-President the first time.Nyachae had earlier said because President Moi knows Kanu Secretary-General Raila Odinga was no pushover, a Berlin wall has been created to stop his fight for democracy.
Saitoti told President Moi to stop condemning the Rainbow Alliance for allegedly creating disunity in Kanu and splitting the party. Saitoti said Rainbow needs a pat on the back for bringing back democracy into Kanu. He said Kenyans need to be allowed to choose a leader who would succeed President Moi. He said the constitution of Kanu allows members to vie for elective posts, the Presidency and for parliamentary seats. He said that at this historical moment in time, Kenya required a leader who has credentials, experience, dynamism and vision.
Saitoti said Kenya would be able to claim the 21st Century if a thorough surgery of its politics was carried out. He said they were in Rainbow not because of their liking but because of the interests of the country. Saitoti said when he was approached to back the Uhuru Project he refused to change because his conscience was clear. He said he was not worried about his sacking because it was for worthy cause.
