Fighting Flares At the Mara-Gucha Border

One man was shot dead while several others were injured as skirmishes rocked the clash-prone Gucha-Trans Mara border yesterday.

Among the three wounded victims who were rushed to Kisii District Hospital with bullets lodged in their bodies was a Standard Eight pupil. The boy was identified as Evans Omoi Ondara, a pupil at Suguta Primary School. The others were Obuba Nyangaresi and Maurice Muteti, a tractor driver at Nyangusu market.

The victims are alleged to have been shot by General Service Unit (GSU) personnel.

Opiyo "Junior" was pronounced dead on arrival at the Ogembo District Hospital where he was rushed by good Samaritans.

The GSU men had arrived in the town a few hours after there was another fierce fight at the Bendere area which is about a kilometre away from Nyangusu.

At Bendere, residents claimed that a group of over 10 Maasai morans had invaded the home of Ogonda Mabiria following a Friday evening incident in which another group was stopped from setting homes on fire.

Three other victims, Jackson Mirera, Ibrahim Nyang'au and Barongo Bundi, had arrows embedded in their bodies from the Bendere fighting.

Merera and Nyang'au were admitted to the Kisii General Hospital while Bundi was taken to a dispensary in Nyangusu.

At around 2 pm, there was still chaos at the Nyangusu market as residents lit bonfires protesting against the shooting incident.

Security officers from Trans Mara and Gucha districts, including the respective police bosses Wachira Mathenge and Burudi Makokha, later arrived at the troubled market to restore peace and order.

Yesterday's incident comes hardly a fortnight after three other people were killed at Nyagenke area on the southern side of the common border.
