Ford-People leader Simeon Nyachae yesterday quit the Supper Alliance in a huff, after failing to agree with his National Rainbow Coalition colleagues on the framework for arriving at a single presidential candidate. The Liberal Democratic Party and the National Alliance Party of Kenya had tentatively settled on Kibaki as their compromise single candidate to take on Kanu’s Uhuru Kenyatta.
Their refusal to accept Nyachae’s proposals was a further sign of support for Kibaki. As a result Kibaki is now poised to become the flag bearer for the LDP-Nak axis.
The LDP-Nak talks will resume tomorrow during which the deliberations will continue, especially on the distribution of other seats.Nyachae also wanted the coalition to create more time for the negotiations towards the creation of the Super Alliance and to widen the scope of membership to include, among others, the controversial section of the Social Democratic Party led by Dr Apollo Njonjo. Both suggestions were also rejected.
