Rose Moraa Ogendi, 14, was preparing lunch at home when she received news that she was the best girl in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examination.
"It cannot be me. Are you sure it's me who scored that highly?" she asked, as she hugged her father, Pastor James Ogendi who heads the Nyamira Free Pentecostal Church, and her mother, Mrs Lilian Ogendi, who broke the news.
She said of her 481 marks: "I knew l could do well but not as well as this." Dazed by the attention on her, Moraa attributed her good performance to the many hours she spent preparing for the examination, prayers and guidance from her teachers at Busara Forest View Academy in Nyahururu.
She would like to be a surgeon and hopes to join Alliance Girls High School. Parents of pupils whose results were cancelled due to irregularities have threatened to sue headteachers and examination officials in charge of the affected centres.
Speaking in Kisii, the parents from Gucha said they had wasted money and time helping their children to prepare for the examinations. "We strongly believe that respective heads and examination officials must have colluded to influence our children to cheat. They must be held accountable," said one who sought anonymity. Two MPs in Gucha District, which led in the number of examination irregularities called for the prosecution of examination officials involved.
Mr Stephen Manoti (Bobasi) and Omingo Magara (South Mugirango) said the irregularities were an embarrassment to residents. The District Officer, Mr James Ochieng, said he was satisfied with the examination results adding that 35 candidates at Keroka Springs Academy had their results cancelled because they cheated in the sciences. Stern action would be taken against those who assisted the candidates to cheat, he warned as Education officials in the district declined to comment on the matter.
Some 143 candidates in the district had their results cancelled due to cheating.
