More Sponsors On Board for Nyaribari Masaba Road Race

Two firms in Kisii town have come on board as sponsors of the Nyaribari Masaba road race and cross country meeting which takes place at Masimba town today.

Nyaribari Masaba MP Hezron Manduku, who is the meet's main sponsor, said Hema Hospital and Highspring mineral water company would supply materials as part of a Sh200,000 sponsorship package.Kisii district commissioner Abdullahi Lelon will be the chief guest.

The meet will also be used to sensitise people on malaria and other diseases. Manduku said Hema Hospital would also present treated Mosquito Nets to the participants and Highspring would provide transport. A total of 50 nets will be given to the winners and several blankets to other participants.

Organisers yesterday said the sponsors were keen on assisting Athletics Kenya's Kisii sub-branch to organise races to tap talent especially among the youths who are unable to travel out of the area for major meets.

AK Kisii secretary John Makinda and vice-chairman James Matundura said all arrangements for today's races have been finalised .The 10km race will start at Keroka town outside Ichuni Girls High school and finish at Masimba town where the cross country races will take place.

The top three athletes in the 10km will receive Sh3,000, Sh2,000, and Sh1,000 respectively in both men's and women's races. Those who will participate in the eight kilometre men's and women's races will also receive the same cash price awards as in the road race besides other awards.

There will also be a six-kilometre women's race on the programme. However, the traditional 12km race will not be run.Organisers said yesterday that there would be several special age-group events in which the top 10 finishers will carry home blankets.

Athletes aged 40 years and above will compete in a one-kilometre race.

Athletics Kenya's Kisii sub-branch treasurer Nicodemus Oyori said yesterday that there would be no entry fees charged.
