Kisii schools vow to prove their innocence

Kisii High School, where KCSE results for 197 candidates were cancelled last year has done all it can to prove this year that its candidates did not cheat. For a start, the school has registered 360 candidates probably the largest Knec has had to handle from a single centre. The big number was caused by a spill over from last year’s misfortune that forced the school to accept 123 repeaters whose results were nullified.

The principal Mr Edward Onwonga exuded confidence that this year’s candidates are well prepared for the Form Four exams starting later this month.Onwonga told The Sunday Standard in his office this week that the teachers have done their part and the candidates were ready for the exams. The principal said the repeaters were initially demoralised by the cancellation of results last year. But they have been counselled and are prepared to take the exams.

Last year’s candidates had their results cancelled due to alleged collusion in mathematics, biology and chemistry. The heads of the three subjects at that time have since been interdicted. The school skipped the district mock and opted to evaluate the candidates through internal exams."The boys are good and promising. We have evaluated them though our internal mock in which they posted impressive results. We are optimistic they will eventually do even better," Onwonga said.Teachers interviewed said the candidates are as good as last year’s and if there is a difference, it is negligible in relation to exam performance.

The repeaters say that Knec denied them a chance to sit supplementary exams but nothing much has changed this year."I am sure I did well last year but even this I will prove that I did not cheat," said James Onkoba whose results were withheld. The story is the same at Kiabonyoru and Gekomoni secondary schools in Nyamira District. Kiabonyoru had 73 candidates affected and most of them went back to the same school to repeat. The principal, Mr Bernard Osumo says the 143 candidates registered this year are ready to prove their innocence. They posted a mean score of 5.4288 in this year’s Nyamira District mock exams to become number 27 of 145 schools that participated.Gekomoni took position 123 in the mocks after posting a mean score of 3.61. The principal, Mr Mongare Okoyo says this is an improvement on last year’s mock results.

The school had results for 43 candidates cancelled last year for cheating in the chemistry paper. The rest 155 got their results.
At Bishop Mugendi Nyakegogi Secondary School in Gucha District, where also all the 98 candidates had their results cancelled life is back to normal. The principal, Mr John Ochako, is optimistic that his students will do well.
