This was said by AK Nyanza South chairman Peter Angwenyi at Safaricom House, Nairobi, where the mobile phone service provider Safaricom announced a Sh800,000 sponsorship package for the Gusii Golden series 10km road races in Kisii, Gucha and Nyamira Districts from August 18.While unveiling the series, Safaricom's chief executive officer Michael Joseph said the first race would be the Safaricom Bamba Kisii 10km race on August 18 followed by the Safaricom Sambaza Gucha 10km race on September 8 and the final Safaricom Kebirigo 10km race on October 6.
The Kisii race will be held in the streets of Kisii town while the Gucha competition will be hosted in Ogembo town. Kebirigo town is to be the venue for the final race, added Peter Angwenyi who is also the chairman of Nyanza South.Joseph said the firm had taken up the sponsorship as part of the firm's commitment to support sports development in Kenya.
"As you all know Mombasa will host the world cross-country championships next March and as a truly Kenyan company, we are committed in helping the country's athletes perform at the highest level. The Safaricom Gusii Golden Series is part of our contribution to exposing the country's talent," Joseph said.
In a unique model, athletes taking part in the three races will also scoop attractive local prizes ranging from livestock and farm produce. They will also pocket cash prizes with any male or female athlete who wins in all the three races (or ranks highest in the three races) pocketing a Sh50,000 jackpot on top of the individual race awards at the three meetings.
Safaricom came on board to sponsor the races in Kisii, Gucha and Nyamira for the first time last year with several athletes going on to achieve great successes in international competition. They include Hellen Cherono of the Kiptenden Athletics Club of Kericho, who won the Safaricom Simu ya Jamii Gucha race and went on to win a silver medal for Kenya at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, early this year. Jefferson Siekei, won the Kebirigo Road Race last year and is now competing in several road races in Europe having been taken into the stable of the famous Italian agent Gianni Demadonna.Boaz Mayaka, who was second in the Kebirigo Race last year, was part of the Kenyan team that won the Beijing Ekiden in China last April.
