AK Announces Prize Structure for Safaricom Kisii 10km Race

Branch chairman Peter Angwenyi yesterday said the men's and women's winners will each get a cow and Sh5,000 in the inaugural race which is part of a three-race series in the larger Gusii with other races planned for Ogembo town in Gucha District on September 23 and Kebirigo town of Nyamira District on October 7. The Ogembo and Kebirigo races will also be run over 10 kilometres.
In Kisii, the runners up - in both the men's and women's races - will get Sh5,000. The other prizes include Sh3,000 (third place), a sack of maize (fourth place) and Sh1,000 (fifth place). There will be several other prizes on offer including various Safaricom gifts, Angwenyi, who is also Athletics Kenya's national public relations officer, added.
The top athletes in tomorrow's race will also qualify to run in the main Safaricom Kebirigo 10km Road Race on October 7.Two-times Kebirigo champion Onesmus Nyerere is one of the top stars expected in Kisii tomorrow along with 2003 Alexandria Marathon winner Daniel Ongechi, according to the Kebirigo Road Race director Eric Matoke Atunga. As part of a community sensitisation programme for the Safaricom Kebirigo Road Race, Nyamira District will on Sunday host the final of the Nyanya Cup soccer tournament. Teams competing in the final on Sunday are Sironga Umoja and Kebirigo Township. Safaricom and the Kebirigo race organisers will give out prizes to the soccer finalists.
