Public Asked to Identify Robbers

Two gangsters shot dead by one of their own during a robbery in Masaba District are yet to be identified. Area criminal investigations officer Silas Sato yesterday asked families with missing relatives to visit Kisii district hospital mortuary to assist with the identification.

"The only information we have is that one of them was a taxi driver from Kisii District," Mr Sato said. The two were killed by a colleague armed with AK- 47 rifle when lights went off in a house they had raided at Riyabe village of Kitutu Masaba at the weekend. They were among eight gangsters who had broken into Mr Charles Ngoko's home and robbed him of Sh3,000, a mobile phone and a power saw.

However, there was a power blackout as they prepared to leave. "The robber panicked and shot thrice, killing his accomplices in the process," Nyamira deputy OCPD Timothy Kivuva said.

Power restored

When power was restored, the owners of the homestead were shocked to find two bodies in their house. Angry villagers blocked officers from Keroka police station who had gone to collect the bodies, claiming the gangsters were security personnel. They allowed them after Mr Kivuva sent CID officers to take finger prints of those killed.

Mr Sato said empty cartridges recovered from the scene were being analysed but nobody had been arrested. Five other robbery suspects were shot dead by police in separate incidents in Nyanza Province yesterday.

In Suba District, four pirates who hijacked an engine boat ferrying traders from Remba Island to Sindo trading centre were ambushed and gunned down. The gang is said to have stopped the boat as it approached Sindo beach and robbed the traders of more than Sh60,000 and other property.

The police caught up with them as they sailed towards Uganda. Two dived into the lake and disappeared but fishermen later found them at a nearby beach and beat them to death.
Provincial police officer Grace Kaindi said security in the lake was worrying but assured fishermen that the Government was committed to protect them.

"We are aware of the arising insecurity but we want to assure fishermen that will ensure that their security is guaranteed," she said.In Kisumu Town, police shot dead a gangster who tried to rob a motorcyclist at the sprawling Nyalenda estate last night.
