Celebrated Gor Mahia Football Club forward Enock Obwaka died in Kisii yesterday, bringing to a sudden end an illustrious playing and coaching career. Obwaka, 50, started out playing for Kangemi High School before joining Uthiru FC, formerly known as Miro Sportiff.
He later moved to Umeme FC where he was spotted by Gor Mahia's scouts and, together with his younger brother, William, decided to join the club in 1983 where he played for 10 years. Obwaka played alongside Abdalla Shebe, Hesborn Omollo, Sammy Onyango "Jogoo", Austin Oduor, Anthony Ndolo, George "Sollo" Otieno and George Odembo Nyangi, among others.
"He was part of the Gor Mahia golden era and won so many accolades with the club and was hugely popular with the fans," his younger brother William, a Nairobi based doctor, said yesterday.
Enock, a speedy winger, who was mostly used as a second half substitute, was a thorn in the flesh of Gor's opponents while William was the main man in attack. Obwaka, who also coached Kisii's Shabana Football Club, leaves behind a widow and six children. Harambee Stars' assistant coach, Jacob "Ghost" Mulee, last night sent a message of condolences to the Obwaka family on behalf of the national soccer team.
