Ochoro Braves Stiff Opposition to Win in Kisii

Wesley Ochoro yesterday overcame stiff opposition to win the 10,000 metres race at the Nyanza South Athletics Kenya track and field trials at the Gusii Stadium in Kisii.

Ochoro, a renowned road racer, clocked 30:26.09 to beat his closest rival Jairus Chachima to second position in 30:26.45 while Isaac Omete, who was tipped by many to win the race, finished a distant third in 39:59.45. Ochoro, who trains at Kambi Nyang'au, was upbeat that he would do well at the national trials scheduled for next week at Kasarani.

"I have been training on my speed work of late and next week, I might pull a surprise at Kasarani," he told reporters after emerging victorious in the hotly contested race.

The women's 10,000m race also went to another road racer, Jackline Nyangeri, who clocked 34:00.00 to win the race beating dark horse Jackline Torori to second position in 36:29.00.

Gladys Mokua finished third clocking 38:53.07 while Eunice Onyancha came fifth in 41:49.05. Having lost the 10,000m race, Torori unleashed a "Kenenisa Bekele finishing kick" to win the 1,500m race.

She clocked 1:51.03 beating Nancy Samuel to second position in 4:54.07. Nancy led other runners for the better part of the race until Torori emerged from the blues to pip her. Janet Isaac was fourth clocking 5:06.09 while Damaris Ondieki of Kisii came fifth in 5:07.01. The men's produced a surprise winner in the name Jared Mokua who clocked 3:50.02 beating race favourite Josephat Ayiera to second position in 3:53.03.

James Getanda clocked 14:09.00 to win the 5, 000m race and was followed by veteran Lameck Mosoti who out-sprinted Ronald Kiplagat in the last 100 meters. Mosoti clocked 14:11.00 while Kiplagat clocked 14:19.00.

The women's event went to Irene Mogaka who clocked 18:07.03 beating Monicah Obiero to second position in 18:12.00. Mogaka took the lead from the start to the finishing point.

A total of 26 runners were picked to represent the branch during the national trials slated for Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, from June 14 to 16.

Lack of facilities

Athletics Kenya secretary David Okeyo was the chief guest during the one day event. Okeyo regretted that the 3,000m steeplechase could not be held due to lack of facilities at the stadium.AK Public relations officer, Peter Angwenyi, was also present at the event, which was also attended by veteran runners Charles Asati and Hesekiah Nyamao.

Other provinces will conduct their trials today at various venues. Nyanza North will stage their trials at Kisumu, North Rift in Eldoret, Coast in Mombasa and Central in Thika.

Each province is expected to field strong teams in the nationals next week in Nairobi. The Nairobi meeting is open for athletes who failed in the disciplined forces championships between May and June.
