Yes side gets nod for rally as No camp cries foul

The Orange team lost its bid to hold a rally in Kisii Town on October 7 as police yesterday gave the Banana camp an okay to campaign at the same venue.

But the losers for the Gusii Stadium venue announced they would hold their rally in the neighbouring Gucha District, in Ogembo Town, on the same day.

Briefing the press, Kisii acting OCPD Peter Maloba said the Simeon Nyachae led team had applied earlier than the Raila-Kenyatta group.

"We have given the Banana group a go-a-head and advised the Orange crusaders to apply for another day," said the police boss.

But the ‘No’ camp rally organisers led by Richard Onyonka and Manson Nyamweya accused Kisii police of being insincere and giving in to State intimidation.

"The fact is that we handed in our application a week ahead of Nyachae’s but since we are not for any kind of confrontation, we have instead decided to let Nyachae go ahead with his rally," said Onyonka.

Nyamweya called for peace during the campaigns in Gusiiland.

Meanwhile, Nyachae today leads top ‘Yes’ team chiefs to campaign in his Nyaribari Chache constituency.

The rally, to be held at Nyanturago playground, will be addressed by among others Cabinet ministers Njenga Karume, Kiraitu Murungi Martha Karua and Raphael Tuju.

Elsewhere, civic leaders from the larger Kisii are sharply divided on the referendum.

Those at Masimba Town Council led by chairman James Omariba vowed to root for the No vote saying they would not pass a document that would loss their seats.

But at Kisii Municipal Council mayor Stephen Omurwa said he was solidly for the adoption of the draft constitution while his deputy, Mr Lukas Ongaki, and three other leaders declared their support for the No team.
